“The big system can be pretty overwhelming. We know that we can’t beat them by competing with them. What we can do is build small systems where we live and work that serve our needs as we define us and not as they are defined for us.” ~ Utah Phillips
2016 was a year focused on celebrity. We celebrated and mourned the kings and queens of the pop-culture prom as we watched their star-studded grand exit from mortality.
Now, 2017 feels like we’re waking up hung-over the morning after the gala, tiaras and bow ties a distant memory, the spectre of real-life staring us in the face. We’re surrounded by daily explosions of shock and daze, and we’re faced with a big system actively working against our fellow Americans.
In response, we are encouraging artists to create work that resists the encroaching definitions of the larger system and actively imagines solutions. How can we stand up for each other? Can we build our own systems that meet needs left unmet? Can we defy alternative facts and define our own truth?
VonCommon is hosting an open call to all interpretations of Post Prom: Systems and Solutions.
All types of media and sizes of original artwork are accepted. There is no limit to how many works you may submit, but be aware that we will most likely accept 1-3 works per artist depending on size.
Works on paper must be framed with no exposed edges. 2-D works must be ready to hang. We can provide pedestals for 3-D work, so please mention in your submission if you need.
Please send your submissions to email@example.com, including at least one jpeg image of your work and a brief description of what you are submitting and how it relates to the theme ‘Post Prom: Systems and Solutions.’
Submission deadline is April 15th, 2017. Accepted artwork will be chosen by a committee of VonCommon resident artists. Artists chosen will be notified by April 25th, 2017. Participating artists will contribute refreshments for the reception as they are able. VonCommon does not take a commission for any works sold, and will do what we can to help facilitate sales at the event, but we do not take the responsibility for doing such.
Artwork will be dropped off by Sun Apr 30 between 2-5pm and be picked up by Sun May 7, 2017 between 2-5pm, or by other arrangement.
The main event will be at VonCommon on Sat May 6th, 2017.
