Sociologist and author of ‘The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life’, Erving Goffman theorized that we present ourselves to the world using masks reflecting how we choose to interact in our relationships- specific to a particular time, place, and the circumstances we encounter as we go about our existence.
“All the world is not, of course, a stage, but the crucial ways in which it isn’t are not easy to specify…”
“The self… is not an organic thing that has a specific location, whose fundamental fate is to be born, to mature, to die; it is a dramatic effect arising diffusely from a scene that is presented…”
“Choose your self-presentations carefully, for what starts out as a mask may become your face.”
It is in this context and spirit that we invite artists to submit work in any discipline reflecting the concept of masks. Of course, this theme is open to any and all interpretations, and we encourage those submitting to be playful and creative in this regard.
How to Submit:
Include at least one image of the work you are submitting, dimensions, a brief paragraph explaining how it relates to the theme, a brief artist bio, and any other pertinent info you think we should have. Please direct questions to firstname.lastname@example.org. You may submit more than one piece, however we may choose only one depending on number and sizes of total submissions.
Artwork will be reviewed by a jury of VonCommon members and artists will be notified via email by May 18th, 2018.
We’ll be throwing a PromCommon masquerade ball at E3 Gallery on First Friday June 1st, 2018 including the group art show, live music, and more.
We’re looking forward to seeing your submissions!
